Google and Microsoft offer Nokia hundreds of millions to abandon MeeGo, Symbian

When Nokia CEO Stephen Elop announces a major change in Nokia strategy tomorrow, cash may be an important factor: Microsoft and Google are both said to be offering Nokia hundreds of millions of dollars to switch to either Windows Phone 7 or Android from Nokia's current phone operating systems.

There's plenty of evidence that when Elop talks to investors in London tomorrow, he's going to make a dramatic change in Nokia's strategy. In a so-called "burning platform" memo he made clear that Nokia is in serious trouble, and needs to take a drastic turn in direction if the company is to succeed.

In the memo, he faulted the company's MeeGo and Symbian platforms, leading many people to believe that he's going to replace them with either Windows Phone 7 or Android.

There's plenty at stake here, not just for Nokia, but for Microsoft and Google as well. Nokia, according to the New York Times, is still the world's leading smartphone maker, even though its market share has plummeted more than ten points in a single year, down to 28 percent. If Nokia chooses Android, it will clearly cement Google's smartphone leadership.

For Microsoft, the stakes are even higher. If Nokia choose Windows Phone 7, it could give that struggling phone operating system a jump start. If Nokia were to choose Android, it could be the death knell for Windows Phone 7.

Underscoring the importance of the decision for Microsoft and Google is that both companies are apparently offering Nokia hundreds of millions of dollars to choose their operating system. The New York Times reports:

To get Nokia to switch, Google and Microsoft are offering hundreds of millions of dollars worth of engineering assistance and marketing support, according to a person who has done consulting for the company and was told of the talks.

Clearly, Nokia isn't simply going to choose the highest bidder. But there's no doubt that the amount of money, and forms that money will take, will certainly be an important factor in the decision. The Times considers Android to be the front-runner, but I'd bet on the underdog, Microsoft. Tune in tomorrow to see who wins.

INDIA'S WIRELESS BASE

India’s wireless base has jumped to 752.19 mn in Dec 2010 registering 3.10% growth over Nov ’10. With this overall wireless teledensity has now touched 63.22. But according to the latest Visitor Location Register (VLR) data released by TRAI as on 31st Dec 2010 only 70% of 752.19 mn are active connections which translates to 529.21 mn. Airtel and Idea Cellular have maximum numbers of active mobile connections with 91.79 % and 90.04% of their total registered mobile users. Vodafone’s active customer base stands at 75.90% and remaining operators have less than 70% active base. Tata Teleservices GSM arm has only 49.76% active customers while state run telecom PSU’s BSNL and MTNL have 56.94% and 35.57% active GSM base respectively.
Visitor Location Register (VLR) is a temporary database of the subscribers who have roamed into the particular area, which it serves. Each base station in the network is served by exactly one VLR, hence a subscriber cannot be present in more than one VLR at a time.VLR data are calculated on the basis of active subscribers in VLR on the last working day (Monday to Friday) of the particular month for which the data is being collected. This data is to be taken from the switches having the purge time of not more than 72 hours

select connect using dial-up connection and click next
Now choose your modem which you have configured and press next

One dial up shortcut would have been created on your desktop,just click on that to connect to internet using your mobile as modem.

TRAI has asked all service providers to withdraw discriminative exclusive MNP offers. Ever since the launch of MNP in India almost all the operators have launched special MNP offers to lure customers of other operators to switch.
TRAI terms any such special tariff meant solely for inducing customer churn of other operators and not available to ordinary customers as discriminatory. TRAI is of the view that such offers violate the clause 10 of Telecommunication tariff order 1999.Clause 10 of TTO 1999 specifies that no service provider will not discriminate between the subscribers of any class and such classification of subscribers shouldn’t be arbitrary. Whenever differential tariffs are offered to any customer ,it should be the responsibility of the operator to justify the basis and it should be logical too. TRAI says that offering differential tariff for MNP is not a valid logic as it intends to induce the customer churn only.
